An avalanche descends down Snow Gulch Creek along Thane Road on Monday during avalanche control by the Department of Transportation. Several large dust clouds reached road level during the firing of about 24 105mm howitzer shells.

Direct hits, and a safer drive along Thane Road

A clear day brought spectators a stunning view as state avalanche managers used some firepower to manage snow buildup above Thane Road. The road was closed yesterday morning and reopened around noon.
