The electricity went out at work today during the lunch hour. A co-worker actually saw the cause as she was driving down the road. A landslide caused a tree (or trees) to slide into power lines. She even has pictures of a power pole on fire, and was on the phone with 911 when the transformer blew. We brought flashlights and lanterns to our training class this afternoon in case the power went out again. :) Winds were forecasted to gust up ot 55 mph. News release below:
JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Weather is being blamed for power outages that affected about 5,000 customers in pockets of Juneau on Tuesday.
Debbie Ferreira (fur-AIR'-uh), a spokeswoman for Alaska Electric Light and Power, says trees hit two lines, affecting four substations. Among them was one that provides electricity to the downtown area near the Capitol.
Ferreira says the first outages occurred around 12:10 p.m. and affected about 3,600 customers served by the Capitol and West Juneau substations. She says crews were working to finish restoring power to the West Juneau customers when there was a report of outages elsewhere in the city due to the branch hitting a line. About 1,400 customers were affected by that.
Power was fully restored by about 2:10 p.m.
Weather conditions Tuesday included rain and gusty winds.
