Lena Point Picnic Area

It was stunningly clear, but cold and a little windy.  Must come back in the spring/summer!

Record high temp on 2-9-12

48 degrees.  And the next morning these ice shears were sliding off of the roof.  The dogs and I had just walked away when one crashed to the ground.

Info on Avalanches and the wind

As reported in this article in the Juneau Empire, Juneau has had 12+ avalances in the last 48 hours.  Love the comments at the end of these articles!

BIG winds today - at lunch when I took the dogs to Sandy Beach, there were 2 eagles "flying in place", riding the winds.  It looked like they were having so much fun!!  The winds were so strong, they come up the channel and hit right there at the beach.

Thanks to my cousin Anita for this picture.  She took this while visiting Juneau last August.  So pretty!

Unplanned avalanche

This morning (Thursday 2-2-12) a little after midnight, an avalanche slid on Thane Road (where they also do controlled avalanches).  In trying to find more information about it, I ran across this Juneau avalanche page that has some interesting reading.

Another later story - Juneau is under an avalance warning until 7 am Friday morning.

I took this picture from Sandy Beach at lunchtime.  There were several trucks working hard to remove the snow from the road so that people trapped on either side could pass.  You can see one at the bottom right of the snow to give perspective how much snow there is on the road.
