Winter solstice and remembrance
Winter Solstice occurs in Juneau on Friday, December 21, 2012 at 2:12 AM.
Rising and setting times for the Sun
On this darkest day of the year, let us remember all the people affected by the shooting in Connecticut one week ago, and also remember our Light in the midst of all the darkness.
The
bell at the state Capitol building in Juneau is a full-scale replica of
the original Liberty Bell. It was given to Alaska by the Treasury
Department in 1950. The bell
is rung at the governor’s discretion.

State of Alaska Capitol Bell to Ring for Victims of Connecticut Tragedy
December
20, 2012, Juneau, Alaska – Governor Sean Parnell has ordered the bell
at the Alaska Capitol building to ring 26 times at 9:30 a.m. Alaska
Standard Time on Friday
in memory of the students and faculty members killed at Sandy Hook
Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.
Connecticut
Governor Dan Malloy has issued a proclamation declaring this Friday as a
“Day of Mourning” and called upon citizens to observe a moment of
silence at 9:30 a.m.
local time. The governor also requested places of worship and
government buildings, which have the ability, to ring bells 26 times
during the moment of silence. Governor Parnell is asking Alaskans to
observe the moment of silence and for churches to ring their
bells during that time.
“I
urge Alaskans to pause and remember those who lost their lives in this
incomprehensible act of violence,” Governor Parnell said. “Sandy and I
offer our condolences to
the victims’ families, friends and neighbors as our nation continues to
grieve this senseless loss.”
Governor Parnell will send a letter to Governor Malloy offering condolences on behalf of Alaskans.
Heaven's Perspectiv e
of the Connecticu t tragedy
twas’ 11 days before Christmas, around 9:38
when 20 beautiful children stormed through heaven’s gate.
their smiles were contagious, their laughter filled the air.
they could hardly believe all the beauty they saw there.
they were filled with such joy, they didn’t know what to say.
they remembered nothing of what had happened earlier that day.
“where are we?” asked a little girl, as quiet as a mouse.
“this is heaven.” declared a small boy. “we’re spending Christmas at God’s house.”
when what to their wondering eyes did appear,
but Jesus, their savior, the children gathered near.
He looked at them and smiled, and they smiled just the same.
then He opened His arms and He called them by name.
and in that moment was joy, that only heaven can bring
those children all flew into the arms of their King
and as they lingered in the warmth of His embrace,
one small girl turned and looked at Jesus’ face.
and as if He could read all the questions she had
He gently whispered to her, “I’ll take care of mom and dad.”
then He looked down on earth, the world far below
He saw all of the hurt, the sorrow, and woe
then He closed His eyes and He outstretched His hand,
“Let My power and presence re-enter this land!”
“may this country be delivered from the hands of fools”
“I’m taking back my nation. I’m taking back my schools!”
then He and the children stood up without a sound.
“come now my children, let me show you around.”
excitement filled the space, some skipped and some ran.
all displaying enthusiasm that only a small child can.
and i heard Him proclaim as He walked out of sight,
“in the midst of this darkness, I AM STILL THE LIGHT.”

Heading towards solstice
It's that time of year when the days are shorter and the amount of daylight lost each day decreases until Winter Solstice on 12/21/12. Last month we were losing over 5 minutes a day. I'm very happy that it is slowing down :)
